MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — More than 37 million voters are eligible to take part in the municipal and regional elections after two months of vigorous election campaigns, marred by accusations of graft and drug trafficking.
The race for governorships will be in the limelight as it is widely perceived as a test run for the 2018 Mexico presidential election.
The ruling centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) holds nine of the 12 gubernatorial seats that will be contested, including in the key oil-rich states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, which give the most votes in presidential elections.
