Dominican President Medina Re-Elected After Deadly Election Day Violence

The Dominican Republic’s central electoral board declared the incumbent President Danilo Medina the victor in this year’s presidential race with over three fifths of the vote; the country's elections, which were held last week, were marred by violence which resulted in six deaths.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Medina maintained his edge over challengers with over half of the May 15 votes counted last week.

According to the latest Central Electoral Board data, the Dominican Liberation Party candidate had 61.79 percent of the vote, with 98.67 percent of the votes counted Tuesday.

The 64-year-old finished ahead of the Modern Revolutionary Party challenger Luis Abinader, who had 34.96 percent of the votes.

The vote to elect the Caribbean state’s president, vice president, lawmakers and mayors of 158 cities were marked by violence, including at least six deaths at closed polling stations. Electoral authorities reported numerous attempts to bribe election officials by political parties.
