MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis also ordered factories which contribute to the pollution to reduce emissions by as much as 40 per cent.
The decision comes after ozone levels on Monday reached 161 points in Mexico City, which is 61 points above the international norm and 11 points higher than the city’s threshold in recent months. In some parts of the city, the level has reportedly reached 168 points.
Smog in the city, inhabited by over 20 million people, worsened in March. The authorities have since issued the first air pollution alerts in ten years and imposed traffic restrictions to last through June, under which one-in-five cars had to stay off the road.
