MEXICO (Sputnik) — In mid-March, the Venezuelan opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition, which control's the country's parliament, approved the first reading of a draft law on holding a recall referendum to remove Maduro from power.
According to the Noticias24 news portal, the Venezuelan court ruled on Monday that the proposed amendment could not be applied retroactively, which means it would not affect Maduro's current term set to end in 2019.
The opposition’s attempts to oust the Venezuelan leader come amid widespread public discontent with his government and the grave economic problems the country is facing.
