MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The measure, signed into law on Friday, makes the capital a near-state, allowing the city’s mayor to name senior officials and enabling the city council to vote on constitutional reforms.

The city boroughs will now have their own councils and borough leaders will become mayors.

Mexico City was, up until now, a federal district that was not part of any of the 31 Mexican states.

Last week, the Congress of Mexico approved a reform program aiming to convert the country’s capital into a new state. Out of Mexico’s 31 states, 23 approved the reform.
