Seven were shot dead in the capital Tegucigalpa early Wednesday, according to local police, while eight bus drivers were killed in the city of San Pedro Sula in the north of the country late Tuesday.

Law enforcement suspects gang violence in the first massacre, as people were pulled out from their homes and then shot, the Guardian reported, referring to a police representative.

The second mass killing took place at a bus terminal, where the eight drivers were killed one by one by masked men wearing flak jackets.

Killings of taxi and bus drivers is widespread in Honduras and is usually connected with the collection of extortion by organized crime group members, the Guardian noted.

San Pedro Sula, where the Tuesday’s bus drivers’ massacre occurred, ranked first in the world in murder rates, with 173 murders per 100,000 residents in 2013, according to the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University of Honduras.
