Eleven Colombian soldiers and a police officer were killed in a National Liberation Army (ELN) ambush while escorting an electoral delegation in rural Colombia, President Juan Manuel Santos said.

BOGOTA (Sputnik) – Departmental and local elections were held throughout Colombia on Sunday, including the Boyaca Department, where the attack took place.

Three soldiers were wounded, while two soldiers and a policeman were declared missing, the Colombian leader added.

Last week, at least nine guerrillas of Colombia’s second-largest rebel group were killed in a military operation in the northern town of Morales.

Last month, the Colombian government and the FARC rebel group signed a legal justice deal for crimes committed during the decades-long armed conflict in the country.
