The Russian Federation Embassy in Mexico could not confirm the Russian citizenship of Yulya Masney Safonchik, 45, and her younger daughter Valeria, 12, who have been found dead in Mexico’s Tijuana.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The representative added that no such information was found at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow. The Russian Embassy in Mexico City is now waiting for a final answer on the matter from the authorities of the city of Tijuana, the representative said.

"We have made all the necessary inquiries, but there is no confirmation that the murdered woman and girl had Russian citizenship," an embassy representative told RIA Novosti early on Saturday.

The dismembered bodies of Yulya and Valeria Masney were found in their apartment on Thursday night. According to local authorities, the bodies were packed into plastic bags and it appeared that the mother and her daughter were asphyxiated before being dismembered.

A number of media sources have reported that the murdered woman and her 12-year-old daughter had Russian citizenship.

Yulya’s older daughter, 19, who reportedly has drug problems, has been detained as a suspect in the case. The motives for the murder are unclear and an investigation is underway.
