MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Two metro trains have collided in Mexico's capital, injuring at least 12 people, the city authorities report.

"MetroCDMX [Mexico City Metro] informs of a collision of two trains at Oceania metro station, emergency teams working on site," Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said in a Twitter post late Monday night.

MetroCDMS said on its official Twitter account that 12 people sustained injuries in the accident, 3 of them were taken to hospitals, while the remaining were treated at the scene.

The reasons behind the crash have not been determined yet.

One of the trains was reportedly standing at the Oceania station when the second one crashed into it from behind. The station's operation has been suspended and all passengers have been evacuated, according to MetroCDMS.

The Mexico City Metro (officially Sistema de Transporte Colectivo Metro) is the second largest metro system in North America, after the New York City Subway. The Oceania station is a north-east connection point between the grey and yellow lines.
