At the moment, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India has surpassed 20 million, while at least 218,000 people have passed away due to the virus.

Sputnik is live from Ghaziabad, just outside New Delhi, where thousands of people are gathering to receive oxygen masks and treatment, as India is facing the worst surge in coronavirus numbers since the beginning of the pandemic.

The country has confirmed a daily rise of over 300,000 cases for 12 days in a row, while crematoriums in Indian cities are working daily beyond their capacity, unable to cope with the influx of bodies amid a rising death toll.
