Russia sends humanitarian aid to Italy to help it fight COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak - Sputnik International

Earlier, Russian military aircraft arrived in Italy with specialists and equipment for disinfection to help fight the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Russian military experts who have arrived in Italy for assisting the fight against the coronavirus will be working in the city of Bergamo, located in Lombardy region, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

"It has been determined, following consultations, that Russian military experts, who have experience in fighting epidemics ... across the whole world, will start fulfilling tasks in the Italian city of Bergamo," the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The Russian experts are currently preparing for a 600-kilometer (372-mile) journey, they are coordinating documents and also preparing machinery and equipment for relocation, according to the ministry.

Mobile disinfection units and mobile laboratories for diagnosing infectious diseases have been delivered to Italy to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the ministry added.

At present, more than 50,000 people are infected with the novel coronavirus in Italy, up 3,800 cases over the past 24 hours. More than 6,000 people have died.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) a pandemic. According to the latest WHO data, more than 332,000 cases have been confirmed worldwide, over 14,500 people have died.
