The suspected perpetrator of the stabbing attack in the Finnish city of Turku stayed in Germany from the end of 2015 through early 2016, a German Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — The Finnish police and the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) received a tip that the key suspect in the stabbing attack in the southwestern city of Turku was radicalized in early 2017.

"The suspected criminal, on whom Finnish authorities gave us personal data, resided in Germany in the period from late 2015 to early 2016," said German Interior Ministry spokesperson, adding that the suspect did not apply for asylum.

German and Finnish authorities are closely cooperating on the investigation, the spokesperson noted.

On Friday, two people were killed and eight others were injured in a knife attack in Turku's market square. The key suspect, who was shot by police while being detained, was identified as an 18-year-old Moroccan citizen. The suspect arrived in Turku last year and was trying to get asylum in Finland.
