STRASBOURG (Sputnik) — The draft resolution on EU strategic communication to counteract propaganda against the bloc by third parties says that Russia is allegedly engaged in propaganda against the European Union. Authors of the document equate counteracting Russia with the resistance to Daesh, outlawed in Russia, and call on EU member states to boost financing counterpropaganda projects. The vote on the issue is set for Wednesday.
"With the exception of the Yugoslavian civil war, after decades of relative peace in Europe, this report is worryingly reminiscent of the cold war. The breakdown in relations between the West and Russia, of which both parties are guilty, has produced far more insecurity in Europe," Carver said Tuesday at the European Parliament's plenary session dedicated to the discussion of the resolution.
The lawmaker called on his colleagues to remember the "hard-learned" lessons of the cold war such as the need to be more careful in the issues of deterrence, to carry out more sophisticated diplomacy and to look for cooperation where it was possible.
Both Washington and Brussels regularly accuse Moscow of being engaged in information warfare with the West. In order to counteract the so-called Russian propaganda, the document proposed by EU lawmaker from Poland Anna Elzbieta Fotyga calls on the EU members states to cooperate with NATO to develop mechanisms of coordinated strategic communications and countering hybrid threats.
