MOSCOW (Sputnik) — New Normandy Format talks on Ukrainian reconciliation are scheduled to take place in the upcoming weeks, French President Francois Hollande said Monday.

"In Ukraine, we need to continue the process of Minsk…including the implementation of the special status, [addressing] the security situation and the lack of trust between the parties. We agreed to organize in the next few weeks a summit between Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine," Hollande posted on his official Facebook account.

On Sunday, the French leader said he wanted to discuss Ukraine and Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin at their one-on-one meeting in China's Hangzhou, where a G20 summit is currently taking place.

In April 2014, Kiev authorities launched a military operation to suppress pro-independence militia in the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region. In February 2015, the two sides reached a ceasefire deal after talks brokered by the leaders of Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine — the so-called Normandy Format — in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.

Key points of the Minsk agreements include a ceasefire, heavy weapons withdrawal from the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, constitutional reforms, including a decentralization of power in the country, and granting a special status to the Donbas region.
