"What we want is a date for dismantling of the northern part of the Jungle [camp]. We will not move until we get a date [for its removal]," Frederic Van Gansbeke, the leader of the group representing local Calais residents, was quoted as saying by La Voix Du Nord newspaper.
The unprecedented action is due to start next Monday at 7:00 a.m. (05:00 GMT). Different professional groups, including lorry drivers and businesspeople, will unite to block traffic on the A16 motorway, leading to the port.
Since last year, Calais has been the home to a large migrant camp – the so-called Jungle – famous for its poor conditions. Thousands of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East are living in the Jungle, located not far from the Channel Tunnel, in the hope of reaching the United Kingdom.
As of early August, the camp had more than 9,000 residents, including 865 minors, of whom 676 were unaccompanied children.
