The annual amount of payouts to UK veterans, suffering from various types of mental disorders, has increased by 379 percent to 580 in 2015-2016, becoming the highest over the past 11 years, according to local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — There is currently a record number of UK Armed Forces' veterans, receiving compensation for mental disorders obtained as a result of participation in the armed conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, local media reported Monday.

The annual amount of payouts to veterans, suffering from various types of mental disorders, has increased by 379 percent to 580 in 2015-2016, becoming the highest over the past 11 years, the analysis of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme statistics carried out by The Independent revealed.

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) was introduced in 2005 to replace the previous War Pension Scheme.

The AFCS provides compensation for injures, illnesses or death for all current and former members of the UK Armed Forces.
