Regional Georgian Criminal Police Head Arrested for Facilitating Drug Trade

Director of Georgia’s Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regional Division of the Central Criminal Police Department Zaza Surmava has been detained for corruption and for facilitating illegal drug import, the country’s Interior Ministry informs.

TBILISI (Sputnik) – Surmava’s actions fall under two different articles of Georgia’s Criminal Code and could be punished with a prison term "from 15 to 20 years or indefinite detention," under article 262, the ministry said in a Friday statement.

Under the second article, Surmava could get from 7 to 11 years in prison, or 11 to 15 years.

According to the ministry, Surmava was involved in the illegal import of drugs to Georgia and received a major bribe.
