Benoit Hamon, a former French education minister and a member of the Socialist Party, announced on Tuesday he would take part in the 2017 presidential elections.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The French presidential elections are scheduled to be held in spring 2017. Along with incumbent President Francois Hollande, ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy and the far-right National Front's leader Marine Le Pen are expected to participate in the elections.

"I am running for president and I will attend the primaries organized by the @partisocialiste," Hamon wrote on his Twitter page.
