The High Court of England and Wales has ruled in favor of five new members of the Labour Party, allowing them to vote in the party leadership vote between current leader Jeremy Corbyn and former Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Owen Smith, local media reported Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Labour National Executive Committee had decided that members who joined the party after January 12, 2016 could not vote in the contest which is due to end on September 24.

The court supported the argument put forward by the new members that this decision violates the terms of their contract with the party, as they have paid all the party membership fees and expected to receive full membership in return, the BBC broadcaster reported.

The decision sets a precedent and could add as many as 126,592 members to the list of eligible voters in the leadership race.

Criticism of the embattled Labour leader has been mounting in the wake of the June 23 vote for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, which dealt a blow to its economy. Days later, Corbyn lost a no-confidence vote by a wide margin but refused to resign and said he would take part in the party leadership election.
