MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The number of people infected by Zika virus in the United Kingdom has risen to 60 after several people have been diagnosed with Zika in Scotland, local media reported

According to the Sky News television broadcaster, the Scottish government did not disclosed the number of infected people, though it assured that Zika virus did not pose threat to the public in the United Kingdom.

"We can assure the public that Zika does not pose a public health risk in Scotland, and of the cases identified in the UK a very small number have been found in Scotland. The mosquito that spreads the virus is not found in the UK, and in any case would not be able to establish in Scotland because of our climate. Zika cannot be spread through person-to-person or airborne contact," a Scottish government spokesman said as quoted by the broadcaster.

Microcephaly Only 'Tip of Iceberg' of Zika Complications
All people infected by Zika in the United Kingdom have brought the virus from abroad, according to Sky News.

The latest Zika outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015. The Zika virus is transmitted by daytime-active mosquitoes. It does not cause serious complications in adults but is suspected to cause severe brain defects and microcephaly in newborns.
