The European Commission has allocated additional 82.6 million euros ($91 million) to Greece to tackle the increased flows of undocumented migrants and refugees, a statement issued Friday on the EC website revealed.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moreover, 58.4 million euros are awarded to the Greek Ministry of Defense to provide migrants with urgent shelter, accommodation, catering, health care and transportation, the statement continued.

"Through AMIF [Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund], emergency funding of EUR 24.2 million is awarded to the Greek Ministry of Health, for increasing the capacity to provide primary health care to migrants and refugees. It aims to provide primary health care services (medical and psychosocial services) at refugee accommodation centres, and to strengthen the capacity of the public health system and epidemiological surveillance structures," the statement said.

The funding comes in addition to the earlier allocated 509 million euros to Greece under the EU national programs for 2014-2020, the European Commission noted.

Greece is one of the most popular transit routes used by refugees from Middle East and Northern Africa to reach perceived as prosperous Northern and Central Europe. More than 1.8 million migrants arrived in the European Union in 2015, according to the EU border agency Frontex.
