STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The majority of Swedes want their country to stay in the European Union, a poll conducted on the heels of Britain’s decision to leave has shown.
The United Kingdom voted on Thursday to exit the European Union by 52 percent to 48 percent, triggering aftershocks across Europe. Fears are that more referendums to quit could follow.
The poll, conducted by Sweden’s leading market researcher TNS SIFO for SVT channel on June 24-26, found that 52 percent of Swedes would back EU membership and 31 percent would vote against if such a referendum was held.
Asked if they were content with where the European Union was heading, only 14 percent said it was heading in the right direction, while 52 percent criticized EU’s cause. TNS SIFO polls coordinator Toivo Sjoren said this was a wake-up call for Brussels.
