Brexit Diaries: Being Part of Europe Means Being a 'World Citizen'

Sarah Anderson is an artist living in Edinburgh, Scotland. For her, it's always been a Remain vote, and she couldn't imagine feeling any other way.

Anderson told Sputnik that she's hoping for a Remain vote because she believes its best for Britain, for its economy, security, social cohesion — well, pretty much everything — and she's worried about the possibility of a Brexit:

"It is very concerning, not necessarily for this generation but for future generations. Europe has worked together for years now since the war and especially with regard to terrorism — we have a combined intelligence service and I think it's a threat to security if we are not working together on this… Also for the economy, we have a central market that's working well and I think it would be a disaster for Britain if we were to come out; not necessarily in the short-term but in the long-term."

As an artist, Sarah didn't think her own business would be negatively impacted by a Leave vote, but that the art world as a whole could well be.

"I think having the EU has made art accessible and EU sponsorships have and will help that in future — to open up the market."

She also expressed concerns over her children's future in the event of a Leave vote:

"I'm married to an Indian, so they [the children] are half Indian and I think they should be encouraged to travel freely within Europe and see themselves as world citizens and not just British citizens. And I don't want it made any harder for them."

"I think coming out of Europe will make things even more restricted and unknown, and the jobs market would be completely different from what it is now, it will be much harder for them."
