Moscow may respond to NATO's build-up in the Baltic region and Poland by increasing the number of Iskander-M missile systems in Russia's Western Military District, the head of the Russian Federation Council's defense committee, Viktor Ozerov, said Wednesday.

NATO Build-Up in Baltics Raises Doubts About Announced 'Reset' With Moscow
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg confirmed on Tuesday that the military bloc plans to station four its battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

"Russia will take further responsive measures to deploy weapons and military equipment to ensure the unconditional protection of Russia's sovereignty. If an analysis of the current forces and means shows a need, another missile brigade, equipped with Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems can be deployed in the Western Military District," Ozerov said.

Since 2014, NATO has been building up its military presence in eastern European countries bordering Russia, using Moscow's alleged interference in Ukraine as a pretext for the move.

Moscow has repeatedly denied the claims and warned the alliance that its military buildup on Russia’s borders is provocative and could threaten regional and global stability.
