The regional prefecture of France's northern Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie region has deployed two additional elite units in the city of Lille in order to avoid possible clashes between football fans during the Russia-Slovakia Euro-2016 match on Wednesday, the press office of the prefecture told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Security concerns heightened after last weekend’s clashes between Russian and English fans in Marseille as their national teams played against each other.

"Two additional CRS [Republican Security Company] units will be engaged in Lille on Wednesday and Thursday, 10 units in total," the press-office said.

Why Russian Football Fans Became Focus of Western Media Attention
Head of the regional prefecture Michel Lalande announced earlier that more than 3,900 security personnel would be deployed in order to ensure security during Wednesday’s match at the Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille and the match in Lens on Thursday between Wales and England.

These forces, according to the press-office, include two mobile police squads that will be stationed at border and motorway tolls, security teams dedicated to countering hooliganism, an equestrian brigade as well as English, Welsh, Russian and Slovak police reinforcements.

"It [security] is based on the video-protection system strengthened in and around the stadium and in the fan area and in the city center of Lille and the presence of a helicopter of the gendarmerie," the press-office elaborated.

On Tuesday, English and Welsh fans clashed with Russian fans in Lille, forcing French police to intervene with pepper spray and detained several individuals.
