Moldova's defense spending for 2016 may be increased for 25.4 percent, reaching almost $30 million, according to the draft of the national budget.

CHISINAU (Sputnik) — The bill was approved by the parliament in the second reading on Thursday. Now the lawmakers have two weeks to amend the draft before the third reading, Moldova's parliament speaker, Andrian Candu, said.

More than $300,000 will be spend on the projects dubbed Cooperation with the United States and Cooperation with NATO, involving participation in military drills and consultations.

Earlier in May, around 165 Moldovan Ground Forces soldiers and 198 US troops, alongside 58 pieces of US hardware and 40 Moldovan sapper equipment and support vehicles, took part in the Dragon Pioneer 2016 drills in the country.

Moldova has a neutral status according to the Constitution, however the republic has been cooperating with NATO since 1994 in the framework of the Partnership for Peace program.
