The EU law enforcement agency, Europol, is working with the French authorities to ensure safety at the 2016 UEFA European football championship, the police organization said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The US State Department on May 31 warned US citizens of possible terror attacks in Europe this summer, stressing that major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation could be among the targets.

"In a bid to enhance public protection and provide concrete support for Member States, Europol has deployed staff from all its core operational units to the International Police Cooperation Centre (IPCC) to help detect potential threats of terrorism and serious organised crime (pickpocketing, counterfeiting, etc.)," Europol said in a statement.

The French Interior Ministry responsible for overall tournament security pledged to dispatch over 87,000 security staff in order to ensure the safety of sportsmen and fans, including 42,000 policemen, 30,000 gendarmes, 10,000 military personnel and more than 5,000 civil security agents.

Euro 2016 will take place in various French cities from June 10 to July 10. The security issues are regarded as the most crucial ones following the terrorist attacks in Paris that took place on November 13, 2015.
