An explosion occurred near a bus stop in the Turkish capital of Istanbul killing two and wounding at least eight people, Ozgur Dusunce reported Tuesday.

The blast rocked Istanbul's central district of Vezneciler while a police bus was driving by.

According to conflicting reports coming from the scene, up to 18 people were wounded in the attack, including eight policemen, and numerous ambulances and firefighter crews have been dispatched to the scene. Police cordoned off the area. Two people were killed, Haberturk reported.

According to the Vatan newspaper, a car bomb was the cause of the explosion.

The blast took place during the morning rush hour near Istanbul's Bayezit Square district which is a famous tourist attraction. NTV reported that gunfire could be heard at the scene. One of the wounded policemen is in a serious condition.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Turkey has been on high alert as violence mounted between the government and Kurdish militants. The Kurdish PKK group and Daesh terrorists claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in Turkey.
