MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moscow supports recommendations by UN observers addressing the need to stop torture and abductions by the Ukrainian security bodies, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) unveiled earlier on Friday its 14th report covering the period from February 16 to May 15, 2016. Presenting the report, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic said that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) was responsible for hundreds of illegal detentions and torture and that Kiev’s systematic disregard for human rights needs to be urgently addressed.
"In that respect, we fully support recommendations voiced by the HRMMU, which address the urgent need to stop torture, abductions and other illegal methods used by the Ukrainian security bodies," the ministry said in a statement.
