Looming conflict in Venezuela should be stopped, Spanish acting Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Thursday.

MADRID (Sputnik) — Garcia-Margallo said that the crisis should be reversed until it turns into a violent crisis.

"Venezuela is on the verge of chaos. Humanitarian crisis may escalate to violent crisis unless we stop it. It might be settled either by dialogue or by more traumatic means," Garcia-Margallo said, speaking at the Venezuela-related forum in Madrid.

The Spanish top diplomat described the situation in Venezuela as drastic as 76 percent of the population live in poverty, while lack of essential goods amounts to 82 percent.

"The situation is explosive. It can lead to a social conflict, which can be prevented by negotiations," Garcia-Margallo stressed.

He pledged support to Venezuelan nation and offered Spanish humanitarian aid.

Venezuela is getting through critical shortage of essential goods, rampant inflation and falling governmental revenues due to plunging oil prices. The situation is further deteriorated by standoff between executive and legislative branches as opposition won majority of seats at parliamentary elections in December 2015.
