MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least 12 Zika virus infections have been recorded in Germany in May, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which is responsible for disease control and prevention in the county, said Wednesday.

A total of 12 infections were recorded by the disease control organization with the actual number likely to be higher due to under-reporting linked with the slow development of symptoms, an RKI spokesperson told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper.

The figures comes a month after German authorities made reporting Zika virus infection cases compulsory.

"We assume that all those infected acquired the virus during trips abroad," the spokesperson said, adding that the total number of people infected with Zika in Germany since October has come to 56 people.

The Zika virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito common in tropical areas of the Americas, and can affect the brains of unborn babies. The current outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015 and has since spread across Latin America and the Caribbean. Cases have also been reported in several European countries and Asia.
