Passenger numbers in Brussels Airport decreased by more than 1.43 million in March-April following the terrorist attack carried out there, Belgian media reported Wednesday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — According to the Derniere Heure daily, passenger traffic decreased by 29.1 percent in March and 46.5 percent in April, after it saw an increases of 7.5 and 11 percent in January and February respectively.

Combining the above figures, Brussels Airport lost more than 1.17 million passengers over the first four months of 2016 compared to the same period last year, the paper reported.

The airport administration expects the situation to normalize in a few more months.

American and Asian passengers are reportedly responsible for most of the rerouting to avoid using Brussels Airport.

On March 22, two explosions hit Brussels Airport. A third blast hit Maelbeek metro station near the headquarters of the EU institutions, killing over 30 people and injuring at least 300. The Daesh terrorist group, outlawed in many countries including Russia, claimed responsibility for the attack.
