MINSK (Sputnik) — Attempts to "fight" monuments dedicated to Soviet World War II heroes are “immoral and unacceptable," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday during an official visit to Belarus.

“Our common position is that any attempts to fight monuments to war heroes, who liberated Europe from Nazism, are immoral and unacceptable," Lavrov said after talks with his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei.

A number of Eastern European countries, including Ukraine and Poland, have demolished monuments dedicated to Soviet Army soldiers.

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called the issue of “decommunization” a matter of national security. According to Poroshenko, many Ukrainian cities and villages have already been renamed and many Soviet monuments demolished but there were still thousands of monuments and some 300 settlements awaiting decommunization.
