Deputy Prime Minister for Demographic and Social Policies Ivailo Kalfin announced his resignation Tuesday after his party’s decision to cease its support for the government, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Kalfin has been in office since November 2014.

"I am stepping down from the government over a decision of the ABV [Alternative for Bulgarian Revival] political party. I have made lots of efforts in the past year and a half so that there is higher income, more jobs, fairness, and predictability in the social systems in Bulgaria. I am content with what I have achieved," Kalfin, also the country's minister of labor and social policy, said as quoted by the Focus information agency.

He thanked Prime Minister Boyko Borissov for the opportunity to work for Bulgarian citizens. The prime minister has accepted Kalfin's resignation.

The decision was made after the ABV National Council announced cutting support for the government. The party pointed out it has fundamental political differences with the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party over amendments to the Electoral Code as well as energy policy.
