In the context of the current migration crisis, six European countries are willing to extend border controls in the EU from eight months to two years, although the Schengen Agreement does not provide for their further prolongation.

According to the agreement, the border control can be introduced for a maximum period of eight months.

Nevertheless, such countries as Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Austria, France and Belgium are calling for the extension of the measure.

A letter recently sent to the European Commission describes new possible measures in detail. Among other things, the term "temporary" border control is expected to be increased to two years.

Moreover, the border controls that have already been introduced in the context of the current migration crisis, will be prolonged automatically for another six months.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their crisis-torn home countries in the Middle East and North Africa in search of asylum in stable and wealthy EU states.

In an attempt to control the ever growing influx of migrants, EU member states have introduced temporary controls on their borders which have been in place since September 2015.
