The Ukrainian police found an explosive device in the center of Odessa, local police press service said in a statement.

KIEV (Sputnik) — The Ukrainian police found an explosive device near the vehicle in the center of Odessa and detained a person who allegedly planted it, local police press service said in a statement.

“Police officers found an explosive device similar to a smoke bomb at the Deribasivska st. near a GAZelle car. A 20-year-old man was detained at the scene, his involvement in the incident is being verified," the statement reads.

The tensions in the city are high amid the second anniversary of the May 2014 violence that saw nearly 50 anti-government activists killed.

On May 2, 2014, pro-Kiev radicals blocked anti-government protesters in Odesa's House of Trade Unions and set the building on fire by hurling Molotov cocktails inside.
