French police have started to evacuate a refugee camp under Stalingrad Metro Station in Paris, local media reported Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — French police have begun evacuating a migrant camp from under the Stalingrad metro station in Paris, local media reported Monday.

Starting early Monday, the police began to evacuate hundreds of migrants that had been camping below the elevated station for weeks, the Europe 1 radio station reported.

The camp was occupied by migrants from a range of countries, including Sudan and Afghanistan, and had sprung up for the third time since March.

Some 1,000 people are occupying the site, twice more than the 500 identified for eviction the day before, the broadcaster said, citing the French Office of Immigration and Integration.

The migrants will be rehoused at refugee centers in the Ile-de-France region around Paris, as well as other provinces, according to the news outlet.

The European Union is currently struggling to manage an enormous refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa. More than 1.8 million migrants entered the European Union in 2015, according to the EU border agency Frontex.
