German Chancellor and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Angela Merkel owes her party about 9,500 euros ($10,660) in membership fees, local media has reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German Chancellor and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Angela Merkel's debt to her own party amounted to 4,500 euros ($5,050), however, by now, her arrears have more than doubled, according to local media.

Back in 2014, Merkel’s debt to the party amounted to 4,500 euros ($5,050), however, by now, her arrears have more than doubled, the German Bild am Sonntag newspaper claimed.

The sum has increased sharply since Merkel is ascribed to the regional CDU unit in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that has introduced amendments to the party’s funding.

Under the amendments, the membership fees of parliament and government’s members should make up 6 percent of their salaries as a "special contribution to the party," the newspaper noted.
