WASHINGTON/LONDON (Sputnik) – US President Barack Obama and UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn during Saturday meeting agreed that the United Kingdom should stay in the European Union, the White House said.
"The two leaders discussed the impact of globalization on labor and working people, and the need to take steps to reduce inequality around the world. They agreed that the UK should remain a member of the EU," the White House said in a statement issued after the politicians’ meeting.
The US president also congratulated Corbyn on his election as the Labour Party’s head, the statement added.
On Friday, Obama, currently on his UK visit, said during a press conference with UK Prime Minister David Cameron that the upcoming vote on whether Britain should leave the European Union was of deep interest to the United States while "the United Kingdom is at its best when helping to lead a strong Europe."
UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states reached a deal in February to grant Great Britain a special status within the bloc.
