EU Labor Market Crisis Encourages South European Migrants to Head for UK
LONDON (Sputnik) — In September 2015, David Cameron refused to participate in the EU quota scheme to redistribute 160,000 asylum seekers throughout the bloc over two years, pledging instead that the United Kingdom would take in up to 20,000 refugees by 2020 from refugee camps in states neighboring Syria.

"Economic migrants that come to the European Union do not have the right to come to the UK. They are not European nationals… Britain has borders, Britain will keep its borders," Cameron said to the UK parliament.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their homes in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. The EU border agency Frontex detected over 1.85 million illegal border crossings in 2015.
