MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Austria's plan to deploy soldiers at the Brenner Pass border crossing with Italy to stem the refugee inflow will boost the "de-solidarization" in the European Union, Alev Korun, member of the Austrian Parliament and spokeswoman for the Green Alternative party, told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"We are against the militarization of borders and the building of fences on the borders. Nationalistic measures like these only speed up de-solidarization within the EU," the lawmaker stated.
Korun explained that such measures are a "naive" approach, as the real reason behind the movement of refugees is war and unrest in their home countries.
"Austria as well as the EU have to put way more resources into solving these conflicts, making sure humanitarian aid gets to all the neighboring countries who have the largest intake of refugees so far, and the EU has to finally put in place a fair and equitable asylum system," she explained.
Austrian Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil voiced the plan to deploy troops at the Brenner Pass border crossing on Saturday, noting that European Union's external borders were not yet effectively protected.
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the main routes for migrants trying to flee armed conflicts in North Africa and the Middle East. The central Mediterranean route leads from Libya to Malta or the Italian and Greek islands.
