Estonian Security Service Chief Says Russia Tries to Split European Unity

The director general of the Estonian Internal Security Service (KAPO) said in a foreword to KAPO's annual review published Tuesday that Moscow continued its efforts to split the unity of Europe.

TALLINN (Sputnik) — He added that the weakening of the European Union posed a bigger security threat than the ongoing migrant crisis.

"We are concerned about how easy it is to forget that the armed conflict that started in Ukraine in 2014 is still going on… Russia continues its attempts to breach European unity, and until the territorial integrity of Ukraine has been restored, security cannot be said to be ensured in Europe," Arnold Sinisalu said.

Relations between Russia and the European Union, including Estonia, as its member state, deteriorated amid the 2014 crisis in Ukraine. Brussels, Washington and their allies have introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions since the reunification of Crimea with Russia in 2014, accusing Moscow of meddling in the Ukrainian conflict. Moscow has repeatedly refuted the allegations.

KAPO has been publishing its annual review since 1999, the paper highlights the most significant events of the previous year and the position of the security service as for them.
