MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Latvian policy of censoring Russian media is a disdain of the basic principles of freedom of the press and speech, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated Friday.
"The policy taken by the authorities of Latvia of the total censorship using any available means of Russian-language media, contradicts the declared commitment to 'European values,' can not be regarded other than disdain for the basic principles of freedom of speech and of the press," the Foreign Ministry reported.
"[Russia hopes that] leading specialized international organizations, including the OSCE [ Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe] Representative Office on Freedom of the Media, will give an adequate assessment of these hostile actions [limiting the broadcast of RTR-ROSSIYA TV] by Riga," the ministry added.
