"People detained on Lesvos and Chios have virtually no access to legal aid, limited access to services and support, and hardly any information about their current status or possible fate," Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Europe Gauri van Gulik stated.
About 4,200 people are currently detained at two migrant centers on the Greek islands of Lesvos and Chios, Amnesty International noted.
"No asylum seeker should be automatically detained, and these detention centers on Lesvos and Chios are not in any way fit for purpose for the many young children, people with disabilities, or people with urgent medical needs we’ve met," van Gulik maintained. "They must be released immediately."
Under the agreement, Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who arrive in the European Union through its territory in exchange for sending to the bloc asylum seekers from Syria on a one-for-one basis.
