In the upcoming days, Poroshenko will likely push through his long-standing ally and protégé Volodymyr Groysman on the post of the country’s Prime Minister. In the view of the author of the article, the major reason for the swap in the government is the state leader’s cordial dislike of Arseniy Yatsenuk, the current Prime Minister in office.
In attempts to remove Yatsenuk, Poroshenko is guided by his “ego and aggrandizement” rather than by political frictions between two. Such an approach will result in short duration of the government, Politico noted.
The situation is aggravated by underhand intrigue in the Ukrainian parliament which may provoke new elections in the country. As Verkhovna Rada largely consists of “populists, proxies of oligarchs, and rent-seeking businesspeople.”
“These forces, coupled with a group of frustrated and increasingly rebellious members of the president’s own political bloc and an angry civil society, are likely to lead to new elections well before the current parliament’s term expires,” the author of the article wrote, adding that the new elections could result in a much more patterned political coalition.
If Poroshenko fails to find a balance between political and business circles and civil society, neither a new government nor the new elections will make the difference in Ukraine or lead to power a new bunch of demagogues and populists, they concluded.
