BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The European Commission has decided to maintain the extraordinary security measures introduced at its Brussels headquarters following last week's Brussels attacks, a spokesman for the Commission said Tuesday.
On Monday, EU Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva said that all EU bodies located in the Belgian capital would lower the terror threat level from "orange" (a high risk of terrorist attack) to "yellow" (elevated) on Tuesday.
"The threat level has been decreased comparing to the one set immediately after the attacks, but we remain vigilant, and security measures remain tightened compared to the usual ones," the spokesman told reporters.
The Belgian Interior Ministry's Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (OCAM) announced on Tuesday it would maintain the national terrorist threat alert level one notch below the highest possible on a four-level scale.
On March 22, two suicide blasts ripped through the departures hall of Brussels Airport in the northeastern municipality of Zaventem. A further explosion occurred at the Maelbeek station near the EU institutions. A total of 35 people died in the attacks and more than 300 were injured.
