According to an official communique from the Belgian government, the Brussels airport explosions are being considered a terrorist attack.

At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured in twin explosions at Zaventem airport in Brussels.

Tuesday's explosions at the Brussels airport were likely the result of a suicide attack, local VRT broadcaster reported citing official sources.

Flights scheduled to arrive in Brussels airport had been redirected to Liege and Antwerp, among other regional airports following two explosions in Zaventem, a source in Belgocontrol told Sputnik.

The security alert has been raised to the top — fourth — level throughout the country following the blasts. Shortly after the airport blasts, explosions were also reported at the Maalbeek and Schuman metro stations in the Brussels city center.

Belgian intelligence had advance knowledge of plans to carry out terrorist attacks in the country but was unaware of their time or location, the French BFMTV reported Tuesday, citing police sources.

Meanwhile, medics confirmed at least 10 deaths in two blasts at Brussels Airport in the Zaventem municipality that Belgian media described as a terrorist attack.

The blasts in Brussels come just days after Salah Abdeslam, the mastermind behind the November Paris Attacks, was arrested in Belgium.
