Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has asked the country’s expert council to replace him with a “revolutionary” when the time comes, Reuters reported Thursday, citing Iranian television.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Iranian Supreme Leader is currently 76 years old.

Earlier in March, general elections were held to the Iranian parliament and parallel elections to Iran's Assembly of Experts, the clerical body that appoints the country's supreme leader.

Two of Iran's major political forces — the hardliners already in power and moderate reformists — were competing to shape the political future of the Islamic Republic.
