MOSCOW (Sputnik) It comes days after a local court gave the Pas-de-Calais prefecture the go-ahead to evict those present in the camp, where between 800 and 1,000 migrants are estimated to have been living illegally for the last year.

Some twenty workers arrived at the "Jungle" camp at 8:30 a.m. local time (07:30 GMT) and started dismantling vacated makeshift tents and wooden buildings, according to La Voix Du Nord online news magazine.

Police in riot gear could be seen moving into the area where the eviction is underway. The outlet said they were securing access to the camp.

It cited Pas-de-Calais Prefect Fabienne Buccio who justified the police presence by violence from mostly British pro-migrant activists. They were reportedly trying to "prevent migrants from boarding the buses despite the fact that [migrants] acted voluntarily," Buccio was quoted as saying.

Individuals who have been living in the makeshift part of the camp are expected to be brought to migrant processing centers. They will be reportedly housed in nearby Calais or at other refugee centers across France.
