The creation of additional NATO military command centers on the alliance’s eastern flank violates the spirit of the NATO-Russia Funding Act, NATO ex-Secretary General Javier Solana said on Saturday.

“The promotion of NATO military command centers to Eastern Europe  is contrary to the Fundamental Act, and it is this document that gave us the opportunity to have a structure of cooperation with Russia,” RIA Novosti quoted Solana as saying on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Russia-NATO Council to Meet if Agenda Coordinated
NATO’s plans to set up six command and control centers in Eastern Europe are seen by Russia as inconsistent with the provisions of the 1997 Russia-NATO Founding Act.

Russia’s relations with NATO deteriorated sharply amid the crisis in Ukraine.

The Alliance accused Moscow of meddling in Ukraine’s internal affairs, an allegation Russia has repeatedly denied, expressing concerns over the buildup of NATO forces along its western border, stressing that it could destabilize the region.

The Munich Security Conference is an international, nongovernmental, independent conference for discussing major security issues.

Founded in 1962 for consultations between NATO member countries, it now involves representatives from Central and Eastern Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East, as well as former Soviet states.
